A city landfill is virtually closed and criminals are to blame.
Sometime this past weekend, thieves ignored a lock and broke into the old City of Lubbock Landfill just northwest of the airport. It's the site that accepts mostly commercial trash, like shingles, wood and other construction materials.
Landfill foreman Curtis Bartlett says, "They took everything we use on a daily basis like lawn mowers, weed eaters, rakes and shovels. They took everything they could grab and go."
Bartlett says thieves ransacked the place and even stole the security cameras out of the ceiling. They also stole a scale which the landfill needs to weigh items that are brought in. So, until a new scale arrives in about a week and a half, the landfill can only accept clean tree limbs, free of any trash.
If you noticed anything suspicious near the landfill this weekend, you're asked to call Crime Line. That number is (806) 741-1000.
