Fatal Crash Intersection - Is It Safe?

Funeral arrangements are final for Doctor Winston Witt and his wife Zenaida. A memorial service for Doctor and Mrs. Whitt will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at Christ the King Church, located at 54th and Nashville.

The accident that took the Whitt's lives happened at the intersection of FM-41 and FM-179 in Southwest Lubbock County. According to DPS, the Whitt's ran the stop sign at the intersection and collided with a semi. They died at the scene. The driver of the semi was treated and released from UMC.

It's because of this accident, NewsChannel 11 is asking questions about the safety of this intersection. To sum it up, nothing will be done at the intersection at least not in the near future.

Because the roads that make up the intersection are state roads we contacted TxDot. We found that there is not enough traffic to warrant any changes to this intersection. The intersection would need to see a steady stream of 300 cars per hour for 8 hours a day to prompt a change. Right now the intersection doesn't see more than 750 cars in any direction during an entire day.

Also the number of crashes does not meet the 5 accident per year criteria to prompt a change.

We also called County Commissioner Bill McCay today and right now he's focusing his efforts on areas meeting those criteria on Woodrow road around Frenship and Cooper School Districts.
