Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott's Cyber Crimes Unit has arrested John Eric Gilliam, a City of Seminole paramedic, for possession and transportation of child pornography.

Gilliam, 39, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Midland after Cyber Crimes Unit investigators allegedly uncovered hundreds of child pornography images on Gilliam's computer. The state's investigation was sparked by a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Gilliam's prosecution is being handled by U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton's office.

"Child pornography is among the most deplorable crimes that can be committed against a child," Attorney General Abbott said. "Our Cyber Crimes Unit will continue to track down and arrest criminals who stockpile these despicable images. We are grateful to U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton for his commitment to cooperative law enforcement and his dedication to Texas children."

The case was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative that encourages the use of multi-jurisdictional task forces to investigate and prosecute the online sexual exploitation of children. In Texas, the attorney general's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, one of almost 50 federally funded task forces across the country dedicated to this project, provides investigative assistance with these cases. Attorney General Abbott has earned a national reputation for aggressively arresting and prosecuting child predators. Since 2003, the Cyber Crimes Unit and Fugitive Unit have arrested more than 600 sex predators. Prosecutors also have obtained more than 70 child pornography convictions.
