A Kansas church that protested the funeral of a fallen Lubbock soldier could go bankrupt. The Westboro Baptist Church pickets funeral of U.S. service members, claiming the war in Iraq is punishment for homosexuality.
The group picketed during the funeral of Albert Snyder's son in Maryland. Snyder sued and Wednesday afternoon, a Baltimore jury awarded the fallen soldier's father nearly $11 million dollars.
The amount is expected to effectively bankrupt the church which came to Lubbock last year. They protested outside a memorial service for Andrew Velez who died in Afghanistan. Hundreds of Lubbock citizens and members of the Motorcycle Patriot Guard showed up to bring their own message of patriotism and support for the Velez family.
The Westboro Baptist Church plans to appeal Wednesday's ruling.
