Free Blood Sugar Checks
Larry Combest Community Health and Wellness Center
According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise appear to play roles.
If present trends continue, 1 in 3 Americans, and 1 in 2 minorities, born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Each day, approximately 4,110 people are diagnosed with diabetes. Twenty million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes and another six million do not know they have the disease.
The TTUHSC School of Nursing's Combest Center will offer the health checks as an opportunity to provide awareness about diabetes as well as provide educational information about the disease.
For more information about the blood sugar checks, contact the Combest Center at (806) 743-9355.
