After losing both his legs while fighting in Iraq, a Lubbock soldier has been awarded The Purple Heart.
Donald Axtell received his Purple Heart Friday afternoon. Axtell is one of seven soldiers who received the award in a ceremony at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C.
The 24-year-old soldier is recovering there after losing both his legs on August 28.
A rocket went off near his base in Iraq, shattering Axtell's legs.
Two of his fellow soldiers were also injured, and one was killed in the attack.
