One in four children will go without meals every day.
Startling as that may seem, that is the reality here in Lubbock, and the South Plains Food Bank has a special program designed to change that statistic.
"Kids Café is an after school at-risk program sponsored through the South Plains Food Bank," said Tammy Hester, Kids Café Executive Chef.
Kids Café serves 300 to 500 children each weekday afternoon. Without it, school lunch would be their last meal of the day.
"Those hot lunches are provided at 11:30 a.m. and that's the last meal that they will get unless they go to one of our Kids Café sites," added Hester.
"They're amazing. They're always smiling and they always want to have a good time. They always make you feel good about what you're doing," said volunteer Kyriacos Mooneyhan.
Mooneyhan is a Texas Tech freshman.
"Whenever I came to Tech I wanted to find a way to get involved and I thought this would be a great opportunity," said Mooneyhan.
That great opportunity is changing children's lives. And if you can't donate time, there's always another way you can help.
"Any cash donations help our program to continue to provide the food and the paper products and the delivery of our food to every site," said Hester.
