A Raid on Your Pantry

How do you know when it's time to throw out all of that food on your pantry?  We have a few guidelines to help you out.

For one thing, sugar and honey don't go bad, they stay good indefinitely.  Experts recommend all spices be replaced after one year.

Dietician, Krista Hollinshead says of canned foods, "they have the potential to grow the same types of bacteria and spoil the same way as fresh food."  Krista also says that "non perishable" doesn't mean it lasts a lifetime.

The California Poison Control Center has posted a list of pantry foods and their expiration dates:

  • Flour - 10-to-15 months.
  • Pasta- 1 year.
  • Coffee- 1-2 weeks
  • Worcestershire sauce- 12 years
  • Peanut butter- 6 months
  • An open jar of mayonnaise - 2 months
