For years I have watched the U Can Share Food Drive grow into a major community event.
Thanks to all of the workers, volunteers, and of course the entire South Plains community, we exceeded the cash goal of $100,000, and cans of food are still coming in by the barrels.
This was my first year hosting the food drive and many things impressed me. From the folks that drove from out of town to deliver a check, to all of the can raising contests, I had the privilege of seeing a community come together first hand.
I was particularly impressed with City Bank. Mike Liner, Cory Newsome and crew were not a planned part of the broadcast, but they saw we were in need late in the week, showed up and donated an entire truck load of food...on the spur of the moment! Now that is true community spirit. I hope to see more businesses step up and help like that.
Consider this, the need to feed the hungry is year round. So if you didn't make it out last week and your family has plenty to eat this holiday season, I hope you'll make time to help those families that don't.
