FDA Considers OTC Status for Cholesterol Drug

A new CDC report finds that the nation's average cholesterol level has hit the ideal mark, below 200, for the first time in almost 50 years.  Thursday, the FDA considered whether to allow over-the- counter sales of the popular cholesterol-lowering drug Mevacor, in lower doses than the prescription version.

Merck says over-the-counter sales would help 28 million people who are at risk for heart disease but are not currently getting treatment.

The FDA is concerned that patients who should take the drug will not take it, while others will diagnose themselves and take the drug when they don't need it.
