HealthWise @ 5: Junior League's Food 2 Kids Program

The purpose of the Food 2 Kids program is to provide food to Lubbock-area children who are at risk of not having enough to eat during the weekend.

The Jr League buys the food and assembles the sacks.  We work with the South Plains Food Bank to access special food prices, grants and additional resources.  LISD then distributes the sacks to the schools.  The schools hand out the sacks on Friday afternoons so the kids can take them directly home for the weekend.  We finished this last semester at a rate of 600 sacks per week going to 10 schools.

In January, we will add 3 more schools and expect to distribute at least 750 sacks per week.  There are about 10 items in each sack, and we rotate our menu every other week to keep it from being monotonous.  Examples of food in the sack are peanut butter, saltine crackers, cereal, juice, shelf-stable milk, fruit cups, Pop-tarts, trail mix and a gummy fruit snacks.
