Learn to De-Stress by Watching Your Kids

If what you really want from Santa is less stress, your children can show you how to get that.

Dr. Kathleen Hall, Ph.D., Director of the Stress Institute, says that we need to learn to live more like our kids do, with a healthy dose of play. She says, "We don't quit playing because we get old, we get old because we quit playing and it is so backed by science now."

Dr. Hall's de-stressing system is based on the acronym S-E-L-F.

  • The 'S' stands for SERENITY, or a sense of calm.
  • The ‘E' stands for EXERCISE, for the body and the mind. Dr. Hall says that playing online games for 10 to 20 minutes can help offset your risk of dementia and can help alleviate chronic pain.
  • The ‘L' stands for LOVE. Love is the support we need from our children, our spouse, or even our pets - anyone who will just listen.
  • The ‘F' stands for food. It doesn't mean dieting, just including healthy basics in what we eat.

People say that they don't have time to take care of themselves, especially during the holidays. But Dr. Hall says that no one else will make the time for you, so you have to find 15-20 minutes each day to invest in your life.  It's the best Christmas present you can give yourself.
