Last Minute Holiday Travelers Head Out of Lubbock

It's a silent night out at the Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport as most have already reached their holiday destination.

If you wanted to avoid long lines and lots of people, last minute travelers had the right idea. But airport officials say that was an entirely different story this past weekend.

Hundreds of people passed through the airport on Friday, Saturday and Sunday creating long lines through the security checkpoint.

Three flights were also diverted to Lubbock due to severe weather across the country which in turn created numerous delays.

"I think this weekend had a couple two, two and a half hour delays. We had diversions that sat on the ramp for about an hour and a half," says Gary Loftus, with the airport.

For those traveling by car, an early Christmas gift is lower prices at the pump. Gas prices have fallen about three cents over the last two weeks.

The national average for regular is now $2.97 a gallon. Here in Lubbock we've seen prices as low as $2.67 to $2.89 a gallon.

Airport officials say they will enjoy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, because Wednesday will once again bring thousands of travelers and long lines.
