Group of Nursing Mothers to Demonstrate Support for Local Artist
Breastfeeding in Lubbock is now gaining national and even international attention. That's because the American Civil Liberties Union and Birth Without Boundaries International is organizing what they call a "nurse-in protest." ACLU President Vince Gonzales says, "Basically, it's nursing mothers who show up at a particular location with the intent of nursing as a means of protesting a policy or practice."
Friday, nursing mothers will take their protest to the Buddy Holly Center. Last month, city management stopped Lahib Jaddo from displaying two paintings at the Buddy Holly Center. One is a nude woman and the other shows a mother breast-feeding her child. The city later apologized and said it is working on a new policy. But organizers say they still feel nursing mothers were discriminated against.
