If you are trying to give up alcohol, researchers suggest that you start with a screening for depression. That's according to a study led by researchers at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and published in the Journal of Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental, January 2008, which found, after reviewing nearly 500 alcoholics in recovery, that depression was a major roadblock in putting down that drink.
To test yourself for depression, New York University has provided this private screening quiz. Go to http://www.med.nyu.edu/psych/screens/depres.html. If the test is positive, please consult your doctor.
