Texas Tech to Honor Student-Athletes

The Texas Tech University Athletics Department will be honoring 213 student-athletes, trainers, managers, and spirit squad members at the fifth annual Student-Athlete Academic Awards Banquet on April 28th, 2002, at 6 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.

Awards are distributed in three GPA categories:

3.00 to 3.39 -- Merit Award

3.4 to 3.74 -- High Merit Award

3.75 to 4.0 -- Highest Merit Award

Recognition will also be given to the senior that achieved the highest cumulative grade point average for each respective team, favorite Texas Tech professor recognition, women's leadership presentation, and team community service award. The Banquet will conclude with the presentations to the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year.

    Estacado High School became the first integrated high school in 1968. That same year, the Matador's football team went to the championship, and won, something no first year varsity team has ever been able to do in the state of Texas.
