Another accreditation agency has put Texas Tech on probation.
This time the Health Sciences Center Campus in Odessa is under fire specifically, the OB/GYN program.
This comes less than a month after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put Tech's general curriculum program on probation.
Monday, NewsChannel 11 learned the OB/GYN program was actually put on probation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education back in October 2007.
Dr. R. Moss Hampton, the regional chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology tells NewsChannel 11, the program was put on probation because the review committee felt like one resident had not seen enough cases.
The committee also wanted to see more faculty research.
Dr. Hampton says the program is taking pro active measures to fix the problem by working more closely with private practices and expanding into more rural communities to raise the case load.
"The review committee didn't find fault with the quality of care we were providing or academic environment we had created. It was more of a numbers game in certain procedures," says Dr. Hampton.
Dr. Hampton believes Tech will meet the committee's standard at their next review in October 2009.
NewsChannel 11 contacted the accreditation council for graduate medical education Monday afternoon.
They released a statement saying the ACGME is bound by an Illinois state law that protects the confidentiality of information gathered during the peer review process.
Therefore the agency cannot discuss reasons for accreditation actions or information gathered during the review process.
They go on to say that programs are placed on probation when they fail to substantially meet the program requirements for residency programs. The program requirements cover such things as required rotations and procedures, faculty qualifications, supervision and etc.
The Health Sciences Center says they were under probation long before Texas Tech was put on probation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation Agency a little less than a month ago, after they apparently failed to give the agency some data and information on time.
An accreditation is a standard set forth by different agencies and sometimes it evaluates quality or simply numbers. NewsChannel 11 also learned today, there are close to 150 other residency programs across the nation that are on probation.
