Sunshine: A Good Source of Vitamin D

People know to use sunscreen because too much sun can increase the risk of skin cancer. But a new study out of Boston University Monday, suggests Americans are not getting enough sun for good health.

Dr. Michael Holick with Boston University says, "It's quite incredible but we now recognize that every cell and tissue in your body recognizes vitamin D and requires vitamin D to maximally function and that is why vitamin D is so important."

People used to think vitamin D was only good for the bones, but Dr. Holick says researchers know now that vitamin D can reduce the risk of several major illnesses including colon and breast cancer.

Scientists agree that the key is getting your sunshine in moderation.
