UMC announced Wednesday, a million dollar effort to increase patient safety. This comes in the form of an Endowed Chair, presented to Dr. Rodney W. Hicks. It is the first patient safety effort in the country tied to a School of Nursing.
Dr. Hicks said of the new Chair, "This positions UMC as the number one health care system in America to openly engage the culture of patient safety and they put the money where the priorities were. They willingly donated the chair position into the Texas Tech University Health System, School of Nursing, so it bridges a partnership between academics and practice."
Dr. Hicks says that this new program at Texas Tech will include many areas of increased safety- from working with pharmacies to eliminate prescription errors to maximizing infection control for the safety of health care providers as well as the patients.
