Food for Thought Report 1.10

Bonus Burgers at 2312 50th is a repeat top performer. Zero critical violations on their last inspection earn them a "bonus" of their own.

Our next top performer Keva Juice at 4410 19th Street blends up fresh, healthy perfection in every smoothie.

And we find our final top performer inside the South Plains Mall. Le Bistro wraps up this Food for Thought with a perfect score.

Here is a complete list of the restaurants and their violations for the week ending on 1/10/08.

It's now repeat appearances at the bottom for both of our low performers.

Our first low performer is Mar y Tierra Restaurant at 2722 50th Street. They had 5 critical violations.

  • Raw chorizo, menudo, beans and rice were all above the safe temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Employees handled nachos, chicken and tortillas with their bare hands.
  • Condensation in a cooling unit was leaking onto uncovered chicken and onions.
  • A mechanical warewash machine was not sanitizing.
  • Several food contact surfaces were dirty including plates and a can opener.

The owner says all violations have been corrected, and they are awaiting their re-inspection. The report shows all but two of the violations were corrected while the inspector was there.

Our next low performer is La Malinche at 1105 2nd Place. They were cited for 9 critical violations.

  • Inspectors found a dead mouse in the dry storage area along with multiple rodent droppings. Droppings were also found behind a coke machine.
  • Soda nozzles were heavily molded and multiple bowls and plates were chipped.
  • Ground beef and a pork chop were sitting out on a counter at 57 and 56 degrees. Cold foods must be 41 degrees or colder.
  • Carne guisada, sitting on shelf was 109 degrees. Hot foods must be 135 degrees.
  • A drink without a lid was on a prep table and a pot was in the hand sink.
  • Diced tomatoes did not have a date-mark.
  • Two hand sinks did not have hot water and one of them was leaking. There was also no hot water in the restrooms.
  • There were no hand towels at the hand sinks.
  • The restaurant did not have a certified food manager.

A manager could not be reached for comment. According to the report, most of the violations were corrected during the inspection.
