New research finds that the cholesterol lowering drug Zetia may not have a major medical benefit. Zetia lowers levels of "bad" cholesterol and is often prescribed in combination with the statin drug Zocor. The combination of those drugs is in a pill called Vytorin.
A study done by the manufacturer of Vytorin has found that patients taking the drug had more heart attacks and plaque in their arteries than patients taking Zocor alone.
Researchers say that more studies are needed. In the meantime, cardiologists say that patients should talk to their doctors about other treatment options until those studies are done.
