Defense attorneys for the man who shot at a Lubbock police officer say they plan to appeal.
"We raised a double jeopardy claim and that maybe one of the points that may be raised on appeal," said Rusty Gunter, Zuniga's defense attorney.
Thursday afternoon, a Lubbock jury sentenced Juan Zuniga to 30 years in prison. That same jury decided late Wednesday that Zuniga was guilty of aggravated assault on a public servant with a deadly weapon.
Zuniga shot at police officer Marcus Wall while in his police car on September 15, 2006. Wall tried to approach Zuniga and Michael Gonzales at 59th and Utica. That's when several shots were fired into his car. But police say an in-car computer took one of those bullets, missing the officer.
Gonzales was also indicted on attempted capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant. NewsChannel 11 has learned that case is set for trial next month.
