The governing body for Texas high school sports Tuesday picked a Kansas City company to do the new mandatory drug testing of athletes.
The National Center For Drug Free Sport does drug testing for the NCAA, minor league baseball and other sports leagues. The University Interscholastic League chose the company to test Texas high school athletes for steroid use. Drug Free Sport competed with 13 other companies for the two-year, six million dollar program.
The program will be the largest steroids testing program in the country, involving between 40,000 and 50,000 public school athletes by the end of the 2008-09 school year. Testing is expected to begin within days or weeks, although the UIL declined to say exactly when.
