A Warning About Inflammatory Breast Cancer

It's well known that one in eight women will develop breast cancer. Most women know to feel for a lump and to get regular mammograms. But, as we've told you before, there is another kind of breast cancer that can sneak up on you and can even hide from mammography screening.

Dr. Karen Tedesco, a Hematologist and Oncologist said, "The term inflammatory is a little bit of a misnomer. But what is really happening is that there are breast tumor cells in the little lymphatic vessels in the skin of the breast which is what leads to the reddened appearance."

Symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer include:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Dimpling of the skin ( looks like an orange peel)
  • Tenderness
  • Soreness
  • Warm to the touch
  • Inverted nipple

Inflammatory breast cancer is aggressive and comes on quickly. If you notice any of the symptoms listed above, see your doctor.
