Medical history was made in Australia when the recipient of a liver transplant took on the immune system of her donor. Not only did 15-year-old Demi Brennan pick up a whole new immune system, but her blood type changed from "O-negative" to the donor's "O-positive". Doctors believe this is the first time this has ever happened. It means that Demi will not need anti-rejection drugs for her new liver.
Some organ recipients have been taken off anti-rejection drugs, but that was after the help of a bone marrow transplant. Doctors hope this breakthrough will not only benefit transplant medicine, but other autoimmune diseases like type-one diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
