Texas Tech Tennis Downs Air Force

Wrapping up the weekend with a win over Air Force, the Texas Tech Women's Tennis Team advance to 3-0 in duals competition. Next up the team will hit the road as they travel to Tucson, Ariz., to meet San Diego and Arizona beginning Feb. 1.

Texas Tech began the day with head Coach Cari Groce mixing up the doubles lineup. Samantha van der Drift and Kelsy Garland paired for the first time at No. 1. The two got an early 7-0 advantage on the Erika Shortridge and Lauren Wilson, but were pushed to an 11th game before winning 8-3. Maria Jose Andres and Simone Templeton teamed at No. 3, clinching the doubles point over Air Force's Erlyn Rudico and Samantha Sarkis, 8-5.

After shifting players around in singles, Groce again received strong results. Senior Janet Durham blanked AFA's Rudico, 6-0, 6-0, followed by Tech's No. 1 player van der Drift rolling over Air Force's Wilson, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Garland debuted at No. 2, taking down the Falcon's Christine Abayan, 6-4, 6-1.

Shortly after, Kerryn Potgieter and Templeton sunk in points five and six for Tech over AFA's Christen Monreal and Sarkis, respectively. Hoping for another flawless match, the Lady Raiders came up short at No. 6 as sophomore Kyla Coleman narrowly missed the Falcon's Sarah Cassman, 6-2, 6-4.
