Researchers Say Pot Causes Gum Disease

Smoking marijuana can be to blame for serious gum disease that can sneak up on you at an early age. The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association followed about 900 young adults and those who smoked marijuana at least once a week were three times more likely to develop serious gum disease than those who never smoked pot-  whether or not they had smoked cigarettes.

Murray Thompson, Ph.D., of the Sir John Walsh Research Institute in New Zealand says, "When we were looking at the new cases of gum disease between 26 and 32 year olds, fully one third of those new cases were due to cannabis smoking. That really surprised us."
