No one can argue the celebrity of Bob Knight. He's brought more attention to Lubbock than anyone since Buddy Holly.
Obviously, that attention comes with some controversy. The latest came when he quit on his team mid-season forcing a transition I suspect no one was ready for, except maybe him. Some are saying it is hypocritical to quit on your players after demanding the opposite from them for so many years.
But after watching him on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno this week, I couldn't help but think that maybe, Bob Knight might actually be better for Lubbock now as a "former" Texas Tech coach.
Now here me out and consider this: for all of the great attention he brings for being the most popular basketball coach in the world, he has also alienated some folks that don't appreciate his courtside profanity and antics.
But now, Lubbock gets the positives that come with Knight's charisma and undisputed success, without the risk of what he might do or say as coach. And when he makes these national appearances to bask in his many accomplishments, Texas Tech is mentioned every time.
I understand to have Bob Knight you have to take the bad with the good, and it was worth it. But now Lubbock will still benefit from the Bob Knight express, without having to ride the rollercoaster.
