Former Texas Tech Men's Basketball Coach Bob Knight hit The Tonight Show with humor Monday. Coach Knight joined Jay Leno on the couch, and while he made a lot of us laugh, he also answered some serious questions about his surprise retirement.
Leno started out by asking the question on everyone's mind, why now?
"I think it got to be to the point where I'd just done it for so long, I'm not so sure that I was able to put as much into it in that situation as I could at one time, and I just felt let's go do something else," Knight said.
Is it really Knight's out for good?
"I don't think you can ever say never or always," Knight said.
'The General says he's now on guard at the garden.
"I garden. I shoot rabbits," Knight said.
"Shooting rabbits is not gardening," Leno said.
"Yes it is. Karen plants flowers where I shoot the rabbits in the yard," Knight said.
"So, you just sit out there like the crazy old man on the lawn," Leno asked.
"No, I slide around, hide behind the shrubbery," Knight said.
Laughs aside, Knight admits there are differences with the Knight shift at Tech.
"He (Pat Knight) will probably get a long with the media better than I do," Knight said.
"I think Hitler got a long with the press better than you," Leno said.
So, what does the winningest coach take the most pride in?
"I think the major responsibility that any college coach has that recruits kids is to see that those kids graduate. Why else are they there," Knight said.
