Tons of beef used by many school cafeterias is headed to the trash. Fortunately, Lubbock schools are not affected.
The meat is part of the largest beef recall in US history. The 143-million pounds of beef were recalled after the Humane Society of the United States videotaped employees at a California meat company kicking and dragging cattle that could no longer walk. Agriculture officials say the cattle were slaughtered in violation of mad cow regulations.
No illnesses have been linked to this recall, and this was not beef available for direct purchase by consumers.
