Food for Thought Report 2.21

Just last month, La Malinche Restaurant at 1105 2nd Place was a low performer with nine critical violations. This week they have six critical violations. They were cited both times for not having a certified food safety manager.

In January, the health department gave them more than 30 days to comply, but it still wasn't done when the inspector returned last Wednesday. So, the manager voluntary closed the restaurant until the violation was corrected. NewChannel 11 went by on Thursday, but they were still closed.

Here's a look at the other critical violations.

  • Diced tomatoes and chile rellenos were above 41 degrees.
  • Tamales were about 30 degrees below the safe temperature of 135 degrees.
  • Ice was in a hand sink, and another hand sink was heavily soiled. Those sinks are for hand washing only.
  • There were also no towels at the hand sinks.
  • Two cans were sharply dented.

We could not reach management for a comment.

Our other low performer this week is Freebirds World Burrito at Slide and South Loop 289 had six critical violations.

  • Inspectors threw out diced tomatoes and shredded cheese that were above 41 degrees. Pico was also above the safe cold hold.
  • Diced tomatoes did not have an expiration date.
  • Steak was not at least 135 degrees.
  • A toxic item was not labeled.
  • Utensils, a slicer, knives and plates were dirty.
  • There was no Heimlich chart posted.

Management says all violations have been corrected. According to the report, all but one of the violations were corrected during the inspection.

Food for Thought 2.21
Here is a complete list of the restaurants and their violations for the week ending on 2/21/08.

We have two previous low performers at the top this week.

Denny's at 607 Avenue Q and Josie's at 5101 Aberdeen score big on their health inspection.

Mama Josie's husband and Josie's owner Frank Casteneda says having an inspector in the restaurant is like being followed by a police officer, "It's kind of hard for employees really to see inspectors in the building. It's like when you're driving around and see a police officer and you do the wrong things, but we've try to correct them time after time, and thank God this time we go high performer."

We continue this hot dish at El Paisano Mexican Restaurant at 1301 50th Street and Taco Bell at 402 Ave. Q. They also had perfect health inspections this week.

From spicy to saucy, Simple Simon's Pizza at 34th and I-27 also delivers a flawless score.

And we wrap up this Food for Thought with a double scoop of repeat perfection. Sonic at 1609 Martin Luther King Boulevard and Bigham's Smokehouse at 4302 19th Street serve up savory goodness.
