E. coli As a Source of Energy

When you think of E. coli, you probably think of food poisoning. But researchers at Texas A&M University see the little bacteria as a future source of energy.

They've genetically modified the bacteria, tweaking a strain of E. coli so that it produces substantial amounts of hydrogen.

Even though there's still a lot of work to be done, the scientists say the bacteria as an energy source could one day help power cars, homes, and more.
