Wildfires Burn Across the Area

Firefighters continue to battle hot spots from wildfires in Scurry County Sunday night. Earlier Saturday afternoon numerous wildfires burned across the South Plains resulting in evacuations and portions of US 84 being shut down.

In Snyder, authorities were forced to evacuate the campus at Western Texas College and a local nursing home. Saturday afternoon DPS troopers shut down the North and South bound lanes on US 84 20 miles North of Snyder as well as State Highway 208 North of Snyder to Claremont. Both highways reopened late Saturday evening.

One home near Snyder was destroyed but there have been no injuries reported so far. In Post, authorities closed off both the East and West lanes of US 84 due to a wildfire there. The highway was reopened to traffic late Saturday evening. No one was injured while fighting the wildfire.
