There's more fallout from that massive Hepatitis and HIV scare in Las Vegas that NewsChannel 11 told you about on Thursday. The Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada has admitted to re-using syringes in an effort to cut costs as far back as 2004. In all, more than 40,000 people may have been infected and the courts are now getting involved due to a flurry of lawsuits filed by people who may have been exposed to those viruses.
Brian Labus, Ph.D., Southern Nevada Health District Epidemiologist, said, "This is just the tip of the iceberg. We know there are a lot more diseases out there than we can identify through our regular disease investigation."
Health officials expect that more people will be coming forward with symptoms. Nevada officials are investigating another clinic in Vegas for possibly re-using syringes there as well, prompting federal lawmakers to call for a congressional hearing on the issue.
