New research has uncovered a key to the degenerative effects of Multiple Sclerosis. It's an enzyme called MSP. Actually, scientists discovered MSP about five years ago. But this study at the Mayo Clinic is the first to show that the enzyme is linked to the tissue damage caused by MS.
Researchers found that levels of MSP are high in tissue that has been damaged by MS and that it is contributing to the tissue destruction. As yet, there is no treatment available to treat all the symptoms of MS, but scientists are hopeful that this new research will open the door to another approach in fighting the disease. This study was conducted at the Mayo Clinic and is published in the June issue of Brain.
