Junior Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to an 11-5 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field on the campus of Texas State University in San Marcos.
Texas Tech (6-5) jumped out to a very early 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning as the Red Raiders took advantage of a wild start by Northern Illinois left-hander Matt Jernstad. Jernstad walked four batters in the inning and Tech got a key RBI single from junior right fielder Roger Kieschnick.
As quickly as the Red Raiders took the 3-0 lead, it was gone in the bottom half of the first as the Huskies rattled AJ Ramos for a pair of walks and a pair of doubles by Jordin Hood and Danny Reed.
Texas Tech struck for three more runs in the top of the third to take a 6-3 lead and one they would not relinquish. Taylor Ashby connected on his first home run of the season as he delivered a two-run blast over the left field wall while Chris Hall plated the other run with a sacrifice fly.
AJ Ramos worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth by only allowing a single run and the Tech offense went to work at that point by cranking out five runs over the next four innings. In the top of the eighth, Roger Kieschnick belted a two-run home run to right field that gave Tech a 10-5 lead.
After a couple of tough luck games, AJ Ramos (1-2) came out victorious for the first time this season. Ramos allowed five runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings and struckout eight. Matt Jernstad (0-2) was charged with the loss for Northern Illinois as he gave up seven runs on four hits over five innings of work.
Texas Tech will face the Texas State Bobcats at 6 p.m. this evening here at Bobcat Field.
