Firefighters are battling several major wildfires across Texas.
In King County, just east of Guthrie, fire has consumed more than 1,000 acres and is threatening 230 structures. Texas Forest Service officials say the flames have jumped U.S. 82, which is closed in the area.
Another fire in Callahan County east of Abilene has spread to 500 acres. And in Central Texas, four fires in Hays County south of San Marcos have consumed about 500 acres. Authorities say a neighborhood has been evacuated.
Texas officials issued an extreme wildfire threat for the western half of the state on Friday and through the weekend due to forecasts of high winds and low humidity.
The state set up a tanker base in Abilene with tanker helicopters, airplanes, 25 fire engines and 50 bulldozers. Firefighters are being brought in from other states and are now on standby.
Winds in the region are expected to gust around 60 mph on Friday with relative humidity in the single digits. High temperatures are expected around 80 degrees.
