211 Assists Citizens Following Emergency Situations

The moments following a disaster can be chaotic, especially when emergency crews are busy   helping people who may have been injured. It's times like these when officials urge citizens to not call 911, unless it is truly an emergency. Instead, they ask that you use 211.

"211 can help people find out where the shelters are open, where the Salvation Army may have food and water set up so that way people can call us and get the appropriate information and that way they can know what decisions to make during a time of disaster," Aida Martinez, call center manger for 211 Texas, said.

211 is a free call and available 24-hours a day. Operators provide information about community services.
