#7 Aggies Steal Extra-Inning Affair

Posted:

It was close to being an upset, but not close enough for Texas Tech softball as No. 7 Texas A&M came back to steal a 7-3 decision in a nine-inning affair that lasted well over three hours. Tech led right up until the seventh inning, but the Aggies battled back to force extra frames before coming away with the win.

Megan Shupp landed the first blow in the contest in the second when she sent a pitch well past the wall in center for her second home run of the year and her career. Tech added another run in the third when Leah Legler reached on an error and hustled all the way around from first on another A&M miscue.

The Red Raiders put another run across in the third when Jennifer Bowers doubled to left to bring home Shupp and make it 3-0 in favor of Tech. That would be all the Red Raiders would get, however, as Aggie All-American Megan Gibson settled in and kept Tech off balance just enough.

Ashly Jacobs kept the high-powered A&M offense off balance through the first five innings, but the Aggies finally managed to sneak a pair of runs across on three hits in the inning. After putting Tech down in the bottom of the sixth, A&M tied the contest in the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Natalie Villareal. The Red Raiders were unable to get anything in the bottom of the seventh and the contest moved to extra innings.

Neither side gave an inch early in the extra frames, as the eighth came and went relatively quietly. A&M did the deciding damage in the top of the ninth when it put four runs across, including two on an RBI single from Kelsey Spittler. Tech battled back in the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases with two outs, but Gibson sneaked a clutch pitch by for strike three to give the Aggies the win.

Shupp led the way for Tech, going 2-4 with the homer and an RBI. Bowers also finished 2-4 with an RBI. Tye Coats (3-9) picked up the loss in relief, while Ashly Jacobs had a nice outing on the rubber by striking out seven in six innings of work.

The same two teams will be right back in action tomorrow when they square off in a noon contest back at Rocky Johnson Field. Fans unable to make it to the park can follow the action via gametracker by clicking here.
