A father's attempt to get his toddler to the hospital ends in tragedy.
NewsChannel 11 has learned that one-year-old Shiann Garcia was run over in her own driveway before she was killed in a collision on the Slaton Highway Saturday night.
Slaton Police spent the day talking to witnesses and family members who say Shiann's father accidentally backed over her in their driveway Saturday evening. Perhaps the most unsettling thing - authorities believe little Shiann Garcia would still be alive today if her family had called 911 instead of attempt to drive to Lubbock.
"We're not real sure right now why they didn't call 911," says Slaton Chief of Police Royce Goodson.
What Slaton Police do know is Shiann's father, 24-year-old Juan Garcia, accidentally backed over his daughter Saturday night in the family's driveway.
"We have received some information that possibly the child was alert and conscious," says Goodson.
It could be for that reason Shiann's father chose to drive to Lubbock rather than call for an ambulance.
Authorities say Shiann was sitting in her uncle's lap in the front seat of the car. It was as they sped down the Slaton highway, tragedy struck.
The Trans Am carrying the Garcia's slammed into a white passenger car attempting to turn North onto 66th Street. The Trans Am rolled several times, landing on its roof and eventually sliding into a ditch.
Shiann was ejected from the vehicle. Three hours later she was pronounced dead at Covenant Hospital.
"The thing we're trying to find out is the extent of injuries to the child because at this point we're not sure what the extent of the injuries were before the accident occurred," says Goodson.
There's one thing Slaton authorities feel certain of - Shiann Garcia would be alive today if someone had called 911 for help.
"It's always best to dial 911 and let them take charge of the scene," says Goodson.
Shiann's father and uncle were also taken to the hospital and have since been released. The driver and the passenger of the white car sustained minor injuries. Slaton authorities do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
