Lubbock City Council Members approved extending Cesar E. Chavez Drive in a four-three vote Thursday.
It will change parts of North Avenue U, Cornell Street, and others to connect to Atzlan Park.
The decision goes against a recommendation by Lubbock's street renaming task force. In January, the group said the city should stop changing the original names of streets. They suggested honorary designations only for deceased individuals.
Councilman Floyd Price has also been against renaming local streets, but Thursday he voted in favor of the change.
"I think it's time for us to look at what the big pictures is, and the big picture is we need to go ahead and cooperate and move forward from that so we can do other things," Price said.
Members of the Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee say the route runs through historic, Mexican-American neighborhoods, and that almost 100% of homeowners along the route support the change.
