Karin & Abner Recognized as 2008 Heroes of the Year

Tuesday was a special day at NewsChannel 11 because our very own Karin McCay and Abner Euresti were recognized as the 2008 Heroes of the Year by the Lubbock Area Foundation.

The foundation board chose Karin and Abner as this year's honorees based on their dynamic leadership, never-say-never spirit and longstanding commitment to the South Plains area.

Thanks to generous contributions from area residents, a permanent endowment was set up in Karin and Abner's names. This endowment will benefit the Children's Miracle Network, an organization near and dear to both Karin and Abner.

"Neither of us have considered ourselves heroes. If we can just move in the right direction and be a role model to kids and other young people, then we're thrilled about this opportunity. And to have money generated every year through this foundation that goes back to the hospital to help kids is just icing on the cake," says Karin McCay.

Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance emceed Tuesday's Hero Luncheon. Attendees enjoyed a video highlighting Karin and Abner's careers over the past 30 years.

Judge Sam Medina, Senator Robert Duncan, and former KCBD General Manager Bill DeTournillon all spoke about Karin and Abner's service to the community at the event.

Also in attendance were State Representative Delwin Jones and State Representative Carl Isett.
