Food for Thought Report 4.3

"Probably the best BBQ in West Texas," boasts Klemke's BBQ Joint owner Randy Green.

They've open only about a month inside the Fast Stop at 7822 82nd Street, but they're already a top performer, "I contribute that to the help; they're the ones that do it for me," Green said. "We have like four goals, and one of them was consistency, being clean, good product - of course - and being friendly."

Green says it's a continuation of the Klemke legacy, "We've used his name, his process and his product, and brought it out here."

But if you're hoping to devour this deliciousness for dinner, you'll have to wait just a bit - they're only open until 2pm right now, but they're extending their hours and adding a drive-thru.

We get a second helping of BBQ at our next stop - Pinkie's BBQ. This long-time staple on "The Strip" is now a repeat top performer.

The bakery and meat market inside United Supermarket at 2703 82nd Street bake up a perfect score.

And we head to the Texas Flea Market at 2323 Avenue K for our final top performer. It's a family-sized portion of perfection at Panaderia Tres Hermanos.

Here is a complete list of the restaurants and their violations for the week ending on 4/3/08.

Another flea market is home to this week's only low performer. And they've been at the bottom before. Pepe's Tacos inside the National Flea Market at 1808 Clovis Road had seven critical violations.

  • Cooked pork feet, sitting out on a counter for more than 4 hours at 62 degrees, were thrown out. Several other food items were above the safe cold temperature of 41 degrees.
  • Chili, sausage, chorizo and taco meat were below 135 degrees.
  • Drinks without lids were on food contact surfaces.
  • Menudo did not have the correct expiration date.
  • There was no certified food safety manager.
  • The facility did not have a tip sensitive thermometer.
  • Several items were broken or dirty.

According to the report, most of the violations were corrected during the inspection. We were unable to get a comment from management since Pepe's Tacos is only open Friday-Sunday.
