Protection Against Radiation Damage

Researchers in Cleveland say they've developed a drug that protects against radiation damage.

Exposure to radiation causes cells to self destruct, but this new drug stops that destructive process from happening in healthy cells. At least it worked in mice and monkeys when they were given the drug an hour after radiation exposure.

The report in the journal Nature says researchers hope to start testing it in humans soon now that the company has won a $9 million contract from the US Department of Defense to develop treatment for radiation exposure - not so much for the sake of medicine, but out of concern for global warfare.
