Number of Children Removed From Polygamist Compound Seems To Be Growing
Thursday, authorities in San Angelo are saying that some of the mothers from the polygamist compound are believed to be minors. CPS spokesperson Darrell Azar says 25 mothers staying at a San Angelo shelter initially claimed to be adults.
The girls are all believed to be under 18, and are now in state custody. The discovery takes the number of children taken from the ranch to 462. The number has continued to climb since the children were removed from the ranch three weeks ago.
About 260 children remain in the San Angelo Coliseum. The others have been bused to foster facilities around the state. A Texas Appeals Court agreed Wednesday to hear arguments from dozens of mothers from the compound. The mothers want the court to allow them to remain in contact with their children while the children are in state custody. The hearing is set for April 29th.
