An New Option for Latex Allergy Sufferers

Posted:

Doctors, nurses, and others who have to wear rubber gloves and have allergic reactions to latex may soon have an alternative. Traditional latex gloves are made from the sap of a rubber tree, which contains a protein that may trigger allergic reactions like a rash, hives, or even respiratory problems, in severe cases.

The FDA says the Yulex Corporation in Arizona is developing a new form of natural rubber latex called Guayule ("why-you-lee") latex. It comes from the guayule bush which is native to Arizona.

Studies show that even those who are extremely allergic to traditional latex appear to have no reaction to the guayule latex proteins.
