Idalou Girl Dies After Being Hit By Car

A little girl hit by a car Friday night in Idalou has died. Idalou Police Chief Albert Garcia says 9-year-old Esmeralda Salinas died at Covenant Medical Center over the weekend.

Witnesses say Esmeralda was riding a scooter about 6:30 Friday evening when she was hit by a speeding car. The driver, 21-year-old David Shane Johns drove off, but returned to the scene in the 500 Block of 7th Street. Idalou police arrested him on unrelated warrants out of Lubbock. He was also charged with failure to stop and render aid. Johns is out on bond, but additional charges could be filed.

Meanwhile, a candle light vigil for Esmeralda will be held Tuesday night in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church in Idalou. It starts at 8:30p.m Tuesday. A memorial fund has also been set up to help with medical and funeral expenses. You can donate at any Security Bank location.
