Household cleaning products don't come cheap, but Frugalmoms.com is a website that teaches consumers how to lower the cost of cleaning. "The number one way to save money on cleaning products is to make them yourself. Most of the cleaning products out there are mostly water with a dash of chemicals mixed in to the do the job," says Kim Tilley.
Tilley says, everything you need is probably in your house already. "The base things are baking soda, vinegar and liquid soap, and borax. Then if you want, essential oils." The oils will give you a fresh scent. You can scrub most surfaces with vinegar and water.
Instead of expensive shower cleaners, Tilley whips up something she calls 'Earth Scrub'. "Earth Scrub is a wonderful and a great substitute for Soft Scrub. It's baking soda, liquid soap, and a little bit of vinegar," Tilley says.
For just pennies, you can make your own laundry detergent. "It's two cups of soap grated up, and two cups of washing soda and about three gallons of water and this stuff will last you six months," says Tilley.
How about removing carpet stains? "You can trade your four dollar bottle of resolve for borax and get the job done just as well for much less," Tilley adds. Also, here's a recipe for getting glass, or windows squeaky clean. "It's so simple. It's half vinegar half water and a couple of drops of peppermint," says Tilley.
If you want to remove rust, just mix baking soda, soap and vinegar to get the job done. "It's very good on stoves, tiles and tubs, it's great on stainless steel," said Tilley. Tilley says these simple recipes could save you hundreds of dollars on cleaning supplies. She says, the homemade recipes will cost you between $10 to $20 per year.
