Friends and family will gather Tuesday night to remember an Idalou girl who died after being hit by a car last week.
Witnesses say a car struck 9-year-old Esmeralda Salinas last Friday while she was on a scooter in the 500 block of West 7th Street in Idalou. Family members tell us that Esmeralda was waiting for her friend along the side of the road when she was hit. AeroCare flew her to Covenant Medical Center, where she died over the weekend.
The driver of the car, 21-year-old David Shane Johns is charged with failure to stop and render aid. Idalou police tell us he could now face additional charges.
"She had a big heart, she loved to help everybody. She was always happy and she loved to help everybody. I mean, she was always smiling even though she had a bad day. A very friendly person, she was a very friendly person," said Esmeralda's parents, Abel & Elida Salinas.
A candlelight vigil for Esmeralda will be held at 8:30 Tuesday night in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church in Idalou.
A memorial fund has also been set up to help with the family's medical and funeral expenses. You can donate at any Security Bank location.
