Food for Thought Report 6.20

It's Food for Thought Thursday, and the Top Performers reign supreme this week. With five tops in all, and just one Low Performer to tell you about, let's see what's on the menu.

They've had the downtown lunch crowd cornered at Broadway and Avenue J for 10 years. Giorgio's at 1018 Broadway has zero critical violations this week, making them a Food for Thought Top Performer. "Real Italian food and it's quick and it's not expensive and we get you in and out within 10 minutes, " says owner George Shadid.

George attributes his four Top Performances to a longtime team that knows what they've got to do. "The reason behind getting these Top Performers, because I have the same guys, one of them have been with me for 10 years, this guy has been with me for three years, so they know what to do. Daily, weekly monthly and then everybody knows what to do and this way we don't have to mess around so it's working out so far," said Shadid.

Continuing with those downtown Top Performances, J&J Barbecue at 1306 Texas has a perfect score this week.

Schlotzky's at 1220 Main is another place with zero critical violations.

Lone Star Beef Jerky is no jerky. They've got a Top Performing certificate coming their way.

Taco Bell at 2312 19th Street is also a Food for Thought Top Performer this week.

On to the only Low Performer this time. Long John Silver's and A&W 2344 19th St is where inspectors found five critical violations. Violations including:

  • Improper and inadequate hand washing. Employees were not using hot water or washing their hands for 20 seconds.
  • Products were found in an unsound condition--a can dented along the top and bottom seams was found among the ready supply of food.
  • There was improper handling of ready to eat foods. An employees was found handling bread without wearing gloves or utensils.
  • The water supply was found to be at an insufficient capacity and inadequate pressure. One hot water heater was found to be serving all sinks and only one sink was adequately supplied with hot water.
  • Hand washing facilities were found to be inadequate and inaccessible.

The manager at Long John Silver's and A&W told us all critical violations were corrected on site.
